In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Ramones classic, we revisit a high school too cool to ditch. In , music was in transition. For director Allan Arkush, rock and roll was his passion. After three, four, five listens, The Ramones were not doing that! Yet over time, the band grew on Arkush, and by the time they released Rocket to Russia in , he was a major fan. It was a fantastic record, and I played it constantly. No fancy musicianship, no stage costumes, no frills, they were four average guys from Queens wearing their street uniform of black leather jackets, t-shirts, and jeans, playing fast-and-furious music stripped down to its absolute essentials, with a good dose of sick humor thrown into their lyrics.

In the late s, Roger Corman was looking to produce a high school-themed movie. Knowing that one of his young directing proteges had a bent for music, the head of New World Pictures had an idea. Prior to its release, you may have never heard of the Ramones outside of New York City or Los Angeles, but that all changed by the late summer of By the end of the film, a concert had let out and a school was gleefully blown up. But more importantly, who would be allowed to make such a movie?

The movie is set in Vince Lombardi High School keeps losing principals to nervous breakdowns because of the students' love of rock 'n' roll and their disregard for education. The leader of the students, Riff Randell P. Soles , is the biggest Ramones fan at school. She waits in line for three days to get tickets to see the band, hoping to meet Joey Ramone so she can give him a song she wrote for the band, "Rock 'n' Roll High School". When Principal Togar Mary Woronov takes her ticket away, Riff and her best friend Kate Rambeau Dey Young have to find another way to meet their heroesby winning a radio contest. When Miss Togar and a group of parents attempt to burn a pile of rock records, the students, joined by the Ramones who are made honorary students overthrow the teachers and hall monitors to take over the high school, with Miss Togar asking the musicians "Do your parents know you're Ramones?

The single did not chart in the U. There are three versions of the song. This version was not issued until the compilation album Ramones Mania. The second version is a slight remix of the Ed Stasium version by producer Phil Spector , who would go on to produce The Ramones' next album, End of the Century. This version features Spector's Wall of Sound mixing technique and was the version featured on the Rock 'n' Roll High School soundtrack album and accompanying 7" single.
