Hanging in the background of this dispute is one of the great demons of employment today — robots. Tyrone C. Marty is a soulless being on wheels that rolls down the aisles looking for spills to alert human staff members to clean them up. Making a massive investment in technology, especially against the wishes of the store workers the robot is allegedly supposed to help, is usually an indication a company is looking to eventually replace human workers. With farily well-established self-checkout lines and now a googly-eyed camera bot patrolling our grocery stores, we are moving in an uncomfortable direction as far as human interaction, as well as the dignity of human work.

The grocery store, which also has a pharmacy and a bank inside, will remain open through the strike as the company pays for temporary employees to fill the void. The union workers on the picket line encouraged residents to take their business elsewhere, respect their strike and return once a contract has been settled. They just want to talk about taking away. I guess it ends here today. Floral arrangements, like ones pre-ordered for prom, may not be completed in time.

Better contract, better lives! The United Food and Commercial Workers Union said stores across the three states are affected by the stoppage. The Massachusetts-based company, which is owned by a Dutch parent Ahold Delhaize, this week proffered what it said was a final offer in the talks. The two sides have been far apart on wages and benefits for a new contract to replace one that expired in February. The union claims the company's offer is unacceptable, because it asks employees to increase their contributions to health care benefits, reduces pension benefits for new hires, and limits wage increases for part time workers to less than two percent. White said her job helps support her two children, and for the most part, she's liked working for the company — until now.
